On September 8, 2023, an earthquake of a moment magnitude of 6.8-6.9 and a maximum Mercalli rating of IX (Violent) devastated Morocco’s Marrakesh-Safi region. The earthquake struck 73.4 kilometres (45.6 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, between Ighil and the Oukaïmeden ski resort in the Atlas Mountains.
It occurred due to shallow oblique-thrust faulting beneath the mountain range. The damage was extensive, and historic landmarks in Marrakesh were destroyed. It is Morocco’s strongest instrumentally recorded earthquake, the deadliest since the 1960 Agadir earthquake, and the second-deadliest earthquake of 2023, behind the Turkey-Syria earthquake.
At least 2,960 people were killed, and 5,674 were injured, with almost 2,500 badly hurt. Many fatalities happened in isolated areas south of Marrakech.
