On November 3, 2023, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake rocked Jajarkot District in Karnali Province, Nepal, killing 154 people and injuring at least 375. The earthquake, felt throughout western Nepal and northern India, is the deadliest since 2015.
At least 78, or roughly half of those killed, were children, and 200 homes were damaged. Despite the earthquake’s relatively moderate magnitude, the high levels of damage and mortality were attributed to shoddy construction in the region, as well as the fact that it struck at night when people were sleeping. Many collapsed dwellings were constructed of stacked logs and rocks, and around 62,039 houses were affected in thirteen districts of Nepal, with 26,550 collapsing.
Families now have pressing needs for shelter, medical care, food, clean water, and other necessities. Our emergency response teams are on the ground, working relentlessly to provide life-saving help and essential relief to people in need. We are sending emergency shelter materials, medical supplies, food packs, hygiene kits, and other aid items to affected communities, focusing on the most vulnerable people and their families.
