Four massive earthquakes, each reaching Mww 6.3, and their aftershocks struck Herat Province in western Afghanistan in early October 2023. The first two earthquakes occurred on October 7 near the city of Herat, and they were followed by several aftershocks.
On October 11 and 15, two further magnitude 6.3 earthquakes rocked the same area, linking to thrust faulting. The World Health Organisation projected 1,482 deaths, 2,100 injuries, 43,400 people impacted, and 114,000 requiring humanitarian assistance. Many foreign organisations and governments contributed to rescue and relief efforts.
Hospitals were overwhelmed by the number of casualties and a lack of adequate equipment. As the country entered winter, many more people were left homeless due to the damage. Please consider donating to BGR’s Afghanistan Earthquake Emergency Appeal to help us provide immediate aid to the victims of this terrible calamity.
