The Horn of Africa drought began in 2020 and affects Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The 2022 rainy season was noted as the driest in over 40 years, with an estimated 43,000 Somalis dying. As of 2023, the region has had five unsuccessful rainy seasons, with a sixth anticipated.
As of November 29, 2022, 36.4 million people were reported to be affected in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia, with 24.1 million in Ethiopia, 7.8 million in Somalia, and 4.5 million in Kenya, out of which 9 million women face health concerns, 18 million face severe hunger, 1.5 million are displaced, and 5.1 million children are acutely malnourished.
In Somalia, 7.8 million people endure extreme hunger, which is anticipated to climb to 8 million by mid-2023, accounting for half of the country’s population. The Russo-Ukrainian War has exacerbated the drought in Somalia, affecting farming capacities in the Baidoa and Burhakaba districts. The war decimated farming capacities, leading to 43,000 deaths and famine in the region, affecting 90% of Somalia’s wheat exports.
