Yemen remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis after nine years of conflict, with an estimated 4.5 million people displaced, the majority of whom have been relocated several times over several years, and 21.6 million people (two-thirds of the total population) in need of humanitarian assistance.

In addition, 4.5 million people have been domestically displaced, with 83% citing shelter as a key concern. The majority of displaced people have been away from their homes for more than two years, with many moved twice or more. The average duration of displacement is eight years, implying that they are always on the move and are exceedingly weary and vulnerable.

It all began in 2015, when clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, broke out, sparking Yemen’s Civil War. Over the last eight years, conflict and economic decline have wreaked havoc on people, driving millions to evacuate their homes and leaving two-thirds of the population in desperate need of humanitarian assistance. Even before the present crisis, Yemen was the Middle East’s most vulnerable country. It now consistently ranks among the world’s worst in terms of malnutrition rates, with half of its population living in poverty and lacking access to safe necessities.
